So I’m editing a story about a Haitian mission looking for band instruments for their school, when I get to the following passage:
They are asking for four trombones, four trumpets […] a Snorkelling, three flutes, two horns of harmony, a bass guitar […]
I took band for 9 years, and I ain’t never heard of a Snorkelling.
So I email the reporter and ask if something got mangled in autocorrect. She said that was the exact list of instruments the group requested, and that it was possible they didn’t know the English word for what they wanted.
Some quick Googling solved the mystery. They’re looking for a tuba.
