Sputnik moments →
This dates back to last December from Obama’s first reference to Americans achieving the next “Sputnik moment,” but it immediately came to mind after last night’s SOTU. Fox struggles a tad with the concept of “metaphor.”

Your parents sound pretty awesome, actually
Today, I found my electric globe. It asks you where a state, country or city is and you would have to find it and click on it with the pen. I also found out that my parents would sneak into my room at night, take it and play ‘strip-globe’. FML
How Video Games Can Make Us Heroes →
I forsee adding game theorist Jane McGonigal’s new book, Reality Is Broken: Why Games Make Us Better and How They Can Change the World, to my Amazon Wish List. From the article:
[M]y desire to play games makes perfect sense, she argues, because games offer structured environments, clear goals, and instant feedback on success or failure. The real world is uninspiring and dull in contrast....

How to Ruin a Joke →
Oldie but goodie: The goons over at Something Awful are onto something here regarding the effects of the pace of technology on humor …
[I]f Seinfeld episodes like “The Soup Nazi” had aired ten years later, think of how much more grating the reaction would have been. Millions of images of Jason Alexander emblazoned with the caption “I LIEK SOUPS.” Millions more...

Anonymous was a woman →
Not the Anonymous of 4chan fame. But in general:
“Many of the great quotesmiths have been women who are now forgotten or whose wit and wisdom are erroneously credited to more-famous men.”

The Turin Bicycle →
“Some contend that the vehicle is the actual bicycle used by Christ, as referred to in numerous literary references and still in common parlance today as an exclamation of surprise.”

Apple pulls VLC from App Store due to General... →
Here we go. Either I’m taking crazy pills, or Apple just started its downward spiral as a computing platform. Looks like I won’t be upgrading any time soon.
EDIT: corrected spelling

The Ant and the Grasshopper for the modern age →
“It’s just like the story of the grasshopper and the octopus. All year long the grasshopper kept burying acorns for winter, while the octopus mooched off of his girlfriend and watched TV. But then the winter came and the grasshopper died, then the octopus ate all his acorns and also he got a race car.” -Phillip J. Fry
